Turning the Sod training in Rathangan

Between November 2025 and April 2026, local people from Rathangan came together for ten Turning the Sod training sessions to explore what makes their community special, identify opportunities for the future and develop projects that could make a real difference. Through a mixture of discussion, practical activities, guest speakers and a field trip to successful community projects, participants built confidence, shared local knowledge and worked collaboratively to create a SMART Community Strategy, priorities and next steps that reflect the ambitions of the community.

Community Research

Participants developed a community survey to gather local views on life in the village, the challenges people face and the opportunities they would like to see explored. Promoted through local groups, events, networks and social media, the survey received 509 responses—around 17% of the local population—ensuring their projects reflect the views and priorities of the local community.

Community Presentation

The programme culminated in a Community Information Night at Rathangan Community Centre, where participants shared what they had learned, presented the priorities and projects identified through the training, and invited others to become part of the journey ahead.

The event celebrated the work of everyone involved while encouraging support and volunteers from the wider community.
